Honoree Spotlight: Ed Bowman

Ed Bowman was born in Zanesville to James and Sylvia Bowman. He graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School. After high school, he was drafted into the Army and served his country in the Korean War.

Upon returning from Korea, Ed married Ruth Harmon. Soon after he began working for the US Postal service. Ruth and Ed then started a family that eventually grew to five children. Ed also has six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

In 1964 Ed was asked to coach the St. Thomas 8th grade basketball team. Ed’s coaching tenure lasted forty years.

Ed’s service to St. Thomas Aquinas continued after retirement. He began working as a custodian. His most cherished job duty was welcoming the children to school in the morning. His tenure in his retirement job at St. Thomas has lasted over 20 years.

In addition to hiking, Ed has enjoyed hiking, including the Appalachian Trail for over 15 years and 1300 miles, playing basketball, racquetball, tennis, and fishing. However, his most cherished activity is fulfilling his duties at St. Thomas.

Ed is a member of the Rosecrans High School Sports Hall of Fame and he was named the Zanesville Daybreak Rotary Volunteer of the Year in 2015. The theme to Ed’s life has been quiet service towards his community without the need for recognition or accolades. In his role as coach and as an employee at St. Thomas, Ed has become a father figure to many children.
